U.S. Ammo Dumps in Berlin
by Reinhard von Bronewski
Berlin Brigade maintained several ammunition dumps (storage areas) in West Berlin. Smaller dumps were located inside of or next to U.S. installations. Until about 1966, Andrews Barracks ammunition was stored in a large, condemned 1800s era billet.
The U.S. garrison's two primary ammunition storage areas were located behind Turner Barracks (Am Dachsberg) and at Block 92 at the end of Huettenweg (Tank Road). I don't know exactly what kind of ammunition was stored behind the huge fences and well guarded installations. No doubt, adequate ammunition was a necessity in Berlin because no one knew if and when the Cold War would suddenly become "hot."
Following withdrawal of Allied troops from Berlin in 1994, all ammunition dumps were raised and their massive concrete bunkers filled with sand. Then, sand and soil from construction sites at Potsdamer Platz and Messehallen (Funkturm Area) were piled on top to create a "nature dune" in the Grunewald. Its height is about 12 yards. Nature has taken over. Looking at the scene now, it's hard to believe that once tons of high explosives and implements of war were stored there. Where once had been ammo trucks and trailers guarded by LS guards (GB), now "gruni pigs," foxes, deer, and rabbits play.
