  TCA airfield 2010

by Reinhard von Bronewski

On May 8, 9am, the abandoned former TCA airfield has opened for the Berliners as public 'fun park area'! Unusual for everybody, because at no time before, civilians could walk around on that huge historical compound by this way. It was some kind of a strange feeling to be allowed to hike on the 2 legendary runways, several taxiways and nature areas. Soft green grass and lots of wild flowers everywhere! The first day started with a big party, about 200.000 people joined that event. Visitors could ride bicycles, scooters or roller -/ inline- skates where once airplanes are started or landed. There are 3 controlled entrance gates now ( S- & U-Bahn station Tempelhofer Damm / Columbiadamm / Oderstrasse) to get on that huge open areal, - no fee. In future it's open now for everybody from sunrise to sunset. At night the 'airfield park' is closed & guarded. Visitors can rent bicycles or hire velo-taxis. In some years it's planned to create a real nature park there. ( like a botanic garden )
All this makes sure, - at this historical place at no time an airplane is starting or landing again! For 85 years that site was an airport. That long era is over now. It has seen good and bad times. Good memories nobody can take away! Enjoy the photo impressions!
